Four Young Men, Painting, August 7, 1913
The day Charlie Evans snapped their photo in front of the Brayton home was the second best day of their lives. The first had occurred three years prior, at the end of the Eau Claire High School football season. Their on-field heroics would long define them—a lifetime’s worth of glad handing and back pats and recitations offered of that fateful day on a loop. But for Billy Clausen, Jonathon Abramsen, David Stenger and Harvey Pedersen, that last second drive to the end zone barely edged out the happiness they felt that August day when ol’ Charlie told them to pose for posterity. What’s posterity? Billy had asked, placing his left elbow atop Jonathon’s shoulder. Ol’ Charlie smiled, adjusted his aperture, told him to ask his future children. Words by BJ Hollars.
